Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Certitude available to physicians who are not affiliated with health ministries of Ascension?

No, participation in Certitude is limited to physicians who are affiliated with the health ministries of Ascension, ensuring they have access to the patient safety resources of the nation’s largest Catholic and largest non-profit health system.

  • Are there payment plans available?

Yes; ProAssurance offers annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and nine-pay payment plans in the Certitude program; the nine-pay plan requires your participation in ProAssurance’s Electronic Payment Plan.

  • Can I apply even if I am already a ProAssurance policyholder?

Yes; ProAssurance policyholders are welcome to apply.

  • Will I incur additional expenses to participate in Certitude’s risk management component?

    No, you will not.

  • Is the sole reason behind Certitude to provide lower healthcare professional liability rates?

No; while lower rates are a goal of the program, those rates are based upon Certitude’s overall concept. This includes physicians’ commitment to patient safety (which the program provides resources to support), coordinated risk management, and the unified defense of medicine that Certitude provides.

  • How financially strong is this program?

ProAssurance companies underwrite and issue your professional liability policy through the Ascension Risk Purchasing Group (RPG) for the Certitude program. ProAssurance Group is rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best. It also has been selected as a Ward’s 50® top property and casualty insurer every year since 2007 (out of just under 3,000 property and casualty insurance companies examined)—the only principally professional liability insurer to be so lauded. Importantly, this award is based on objective measures of management excellence through conservative accounting measures.

  • What benefits will I receive for being a member of The Ascension Risk Purchasing Group (RPG) for the Certitude program?

You benefit from a professional liability insurance experience that is unique—unique in its depth of understanding and consideration of the challenges you and your patients face. And because the RPG is run by Ascension, you benefit from its collective strength and affiliated physician participation.

  • What is a Risk Purchasing Group (RPG)?

This entity form was created by federal law to allow those with common risks to negotiate for their own coverage—essentially as a unique risk pool. With an emphasis on patient safety, Certitude insureds are likely to generate fewer claims and, ultimately, experience lower premiums. RPGs have functioned for decades in the U.S. as independent programs underwritten by an insurance company (in this case, ProAssurance). The insurance company is fully licensed by its state of domicile and Certitude insureds are protected by existing state guaranty funds.

  • How do I apply for coverage?

Highly experienced agents are appointed to represent the Certitude program. Once Certitude is available in your health ministry, one of these agents will contact you to answer your questions and assist you in the process. After you apply and accept the premium quote, your agent will obtain your membership application signature and $50 membership fee for the Ascension Risk Purchasing Group, Inc. (for group policies, maximum fee is $250).

  • What are some coverage specifics of the Certitude healthcare professional liability policy?

The Certitude policy provides you with unique policy features, including assistance with response to a data breach or hacking event and reimbursement of certain costs related to that response (including defined fines and penalties).* CyberAssurance® Plus (sometimes referred to as “cyber liability”) provides liability coverage for certain network security and privacy wrongful acts for all physicians on your policy. It also provides coverage for defined costs related to patient notification, data recovery, and fines and penalties for violations of privacy regulations such as HIPAA.

Another unique feature of the Certitude policy is coverage for your peer review services, including participation in a duly constituted hospital committee for the purposes of credentialing persons seeking appointment to a medical staff or evaluating medical staff members.* Because state laws governing insurance are unique (as is each state’s tort environment), your Certitude program may have additional unique features as well.
